Keyes selected a couple at random to victimize, Curriers

On December 2, 2012 officers in an Anchorage, Alaska jail found confessed serial murderer Israel Keyes, 34, dead in his cell. He had committed suicide, apparently by first slashing his wrists and then strangling himself.

His suicide brought an end to a criminal career that had included rape, burglary and bank robbery as well as murder. However, it left many questions about his crimes unanswered.

Israel Keyes (he was apparently not given a middle name) was born on January 7, 1978, in Richmond, Utah. The first child of a married couple, he would eventually have nine siblings. His parents were members of the Mormon Church during his early years and Israel was home-schooled.

He was still a child when the Keyes family moved to a rural area north of Colville, Washington. The move coincided with the family’s departure from the Mormon church. In Washington, they occasionally attended a church of Christian Identity, a tiny denomination preaching white separatist and anti-Semitic doctrines.

Israel Keyes 4 Page Suicide Letter

The arrest of Keyes, 34, on March 12, 2012 for the murder of Alaskan barista Samantha Koenig ended more than a decade of traveling around the country to find victims to kill or to prepare for future crimes by burying murder kits of weapons, cash and tools to dispose of bodies. Since March he had been slowly telling police about his hidden life and how he operated. But the tale abruptly ended when Keyes committed suicide in his jail cell on Dec. 1.

Police are now left trying to fill in the details of his vicious life. Police believe he killed between 8 and 12 people, including Koenig, but only three victims have been definitively tied to Keyes so far.

The FBI released Keyes’ four-page document today describing it as “a combination of pencil and ink on yellow legal pad.” The pages were discovered under Keyes’ body, “illegible and covered in blood,” the FBI said.

Israel Keyes confesses to bank robbery

TUPPER LAKE – A nearly four-year mystery was solved this December when Tupper Lakers learned that their bank robber was none other than serial killer Israel Keyes.

Keyes, 34, didn’t want his crimes to become public knowledge because he was worried about his reputation, but when he killed himself by slitting his own wrist and smothering himself with a sheet in early December, the FBI released the list of his misdeeds, hoping to solve more crimes he had not fully divulged.

Israel Keyes Interrogation Interview, November 29, 2012

After Israel Keyes was arrested for the murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig in Alaska in 2012, authorities realized that the man they had in custody was a prolific serial killer. Keyes freely admitted as much.

During conversations with investigators, the 34-year-old sometime construction worker revealed the names of two additional victims—along with tantalizing clues about other murders he had committed around the country over a period of years. But last December, Keyes killed himself in his Anchorage jail cell, leaving a trail of unanswered questions and unidentified victims.

Those victims have not been forgotten, however. Today we are releasing new information in the hopes that the public can help us identify others who died by Keyes’ hands. The information includes extensive videotaped conversations with Keyes in jail and an interactive map that contains a detailed timeline of his known movements beginning in 1997.
